Soundwaves background series#

We now have a wonderful and varied repertoire that we are able to perform independently with the direction of three of our very own members. Sound Waves has gone from strength to strength with an elected committee and stalwart members who have formed a strong core. So far some of the genres we have experienced have been classical/opera, jazz/blues, Pop, Sea shanties, Gospel and World music.

It was a tremendous help!įrom the beginning Sound Waves has operated on the basis of inviting local musicians to direct a series of sessions through the year. Dave Kaye, Jill’s husband, very kindly offered to set up our first website for free. The founders arranged a meeting of all the singers to share their vision for the future and agree the choir’s name. It was a great success culminating in a performance for family and friends. In February 2009, approximately 30 singers took part. Rehearsal space was secured and dates agreed. The fabulous local opera singer Louise Winter volunteered to be the first MD. This forms the heart of how the Choir is still run today. The four cornerstones of this new choir would be that it would be run by its members for the members, attempt to foster a genuine sense of community by being open to all and have fun, raise money for local charities from our performances and find a way to enjoy different styles and genres of music. Madeleine, Davina, Jill and Jan together wrote their mission statement envisioning what they would love to happen.

In January 2009, four singing friends met for coffee and explored the idea of creating a new kind of singing opportunity for people in Hastings and the surrounding area.
